Bowler

Hearty, wholesome ingredients by the harbour.

After the success of the Victoria Street launch of Bowler in Auckland, we were engaged to transform the much-loved Williams Eatery into the second outpost and flagship of Bowler, we approached the project with an emphasis on restraint, precision, and strategic impact. Working within tight budget parameters and a fast delivery timeline, the design hinged on identifying what to preserve from the existing fit-out—and where bold moves could completely shift the experience.

A deep, velvety brown—the anchor of Bowler’s evolving brand—became our starting point. Applied floor to ceiling, the colour dissolved the crisp minimalism of the previous white interior, replacing it with a warm, retro-leaning atmosphere that feels instantly distinct.

Existing oak veneer cabinetry was retained to maintain a natural, familiar warmth, while the concrete bar was re-clad in stainless steel to introduce the modern-retro character that defines Bowler’s visual identity.

To reshape the flow of the large dining room, we introduced a 1970’s style burnt-orange curtain, dividing the space to prioritise take-out service and unlock a generous new storage zone. The interventions were simple, cost-effective, and highly considered—proof that decisive colour, material clarity, and spatial rethinking can redefine a place without rebuilding it.

The result is a refreshed Bowler presence that honours the legacy of a favourite Auckland café while confidently stepping into the brand’s next chapter.
