Chul’s at Commercial Bay draws on the spirit of Seoul’s 80s and 90s kisa sikdang – roadside diners where taxi drivers stopped for quick, honest meals. We kept that authenticity at the core, translating the nostalgia of those spaces and that era into a contemporary setting.
We repurposed joinery units, modified bar leaners into banquette seating, and played with less conventional materials to create a homely interior experience for Chul’s.
Golden-era colours, humble materials, and playful retro details rebuilt, redefined, and brought to life for a new customer base in Auckland City.
This fit-out incorporated many elements of the previous site to manage budgets, including lining existing exposed stud wall features to partially enclose the space to create a full dining room, paying close attention to avoid any alterations to services locations which would trigger a building consent.
